October 2024 Statement: Auto Theft and Crime

For some months now, I have heard from members of our community about their concerns regarding crime in Oakville, including threats to their property, safety and security.

In response, I have been working with my cabinet and caucus colleagues in Ottawa to access all levers available to the federal government to address this issue. Through these efforts, we are instituting new measures for combating organized crime, including additions to the Criminal Code of Canada, strengthening border surveillance, and funding to support police collaboration across jurisdictions, including internationally.

As with many complex issues, making substantial progress will require action across all three levels of government, together with community organizations, members of the public and police services. I believe that this type of collaborative effort will yield results and reduce crime.

I understand that a petition is being circulated calling for such a multi-government approach. I remain very willing to meet and work together for a safer community — a community where we all choose to live and raise our families.

I believe that my counterparts will lend their support, as we have together on other complex issues where collaboration is essential for meaningful results in our neighbourhoods.

I look forward to speaking with you soon on this and any other issues affecting our town.
