With Team Canada bringing home 27 medals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, it is clear that the Maple Leaf is home to some of the most talented and hard working athletes in the world.

Congratulations to all the remarkable athletes who competed at Paris 2024, including Oakville's own Taylor Perry (née Black) who helped to bring home Canada's first-ever silver medal in rugby sevens, and the GTA's Summer McIntosh who is the first ever Canadian athlete to win three gold medals in one Olympic Games.

Team Canada's unmatched work ethic and commitment to sportsmanship inspire future generations of record breakers, and echo what we are all about: equality, fairness and inclusion. We want to continue helping athletes reach their full potential by supporting a sport system that works for them.

That's why Budget 2024 invests $35 million over five years, and $7 million ongoing for the Athlete Assistance Program which will help more athletes prioritize training in Olympic and Paralympic sport disciplines. On top of enhanced funding, we are deeply committed to building a safe, responsible and inclusive sport system that is athlete-centered, and that is exactly what we will continue to support through the Future of Sport in Canada Commission.

However, whether you're an Olympian or a member of your local intramural team, participation in athletic activity plays an essential role in promoting overall well-being at every stage of life.

Budget 2024 is investing $15 million to break down barriers to community sport programs so that youth can build lifelong connections and ultimately enhance their mental and physical health. By promoting healthy lifestyles, we will see a reduced strain on our healthcare system as well as a stronger social economy. And for some, this program will incite a meaningful career in athletics.

At the end of the day, Team Canada shines not only because of the inspiring talent displayed across all sport disciplines, but also because of the passion, dedication and sportsmanship that our athletes exhibit on the world stage.

Just like all of you, I am looking forward to cheering on Team Canada at the upcoming Paralympic Games.
