Keeping Canadians safe has always been a priority for our government. In recent years, we have seen a rise in auto theft rates, which are often tied to violent and organized crime. Everyone deserves to feel safe in their community, and I know thefts have devastating impacts on families in the GTA, particularly here in Oakville.

This is unacceptable and we are taking firm action to reduce gun and gang violence and protect the safety and well-being of all Canadians.

The upcoming National Summit on Combatting Auto Theft will gather leaders from key sectors and jurisdictions to inform a robust, targeted and coordinated response to rising levels of auto theft. These discussions will build on measures currently in place, like the Regional Auto Theft Task Force and other integrated taskforces, to ensure that taxpayer dollars are used prudently.

Public safety has always been a front of mind issue for our government. This fall, the Minister of Public Safety announced an increase to the Security Infrastructure Program, bringing total investments to $10 million for community centers, places of worship and other institutions. Last year, we also passed Bill C-21 which is taking historic steps to keep handguns and assault-style weapons off our streets to combat gun violence and protect our communities.

I look forward to convening with key stakeholders to discuss how we can work together to combat auto theft.

We will remain steadfast in prioritizing the safety and well-being of Canadians and their property.
