Around the world, women are often disproportionately affected by violent conflict and instability. The Government of Canada is committed to investing in transformational measures to address women’s meaningful participation in defence and security.

As a founding member of NATO, we are working with partners and allies to advance the objectives outlined in the Women, Peace, and Security agenda. This UN Security Council Resolution recognizes the unique roles that women play during armed conflict and calls for the participation of women in conflict prevention and resolution. Canada is steadfast in working with Ukraine to increase the representation of women in decision making processes to help build a safe, strong and peaceful Ukraine.

Throughout Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine, women have taken on operational roles on the front lines and public support roles to sustain Ukrainian communities. Going forward, Canada is deeply committed to strengthening Ukraine and deepening our bilateral relations through strategic investments that target women-led organizations and women dominated trades. When we empower women at the local level, we pave a path for women's participation in decision making forums which gives us an understanding of the complex needs that Ukrainian communities face during armed conflict.

During my recent visit to Latvia, I announced an additional $48.8 million towards the Comprehensive Assistance Package for Ukraine. On top of delivering military aid, Canada has taken on a leadership role in training Ukrainian Armed Forces at home and abroad. Our CAF is ensuring that training operations support the needs of Ukrainian service women through accommodated military equipment, accessible health resources and extensive reporting mechanisms for inappropriate behavior. We will continue to deliver on these objectives through the PROTECT project.

As Canada works towards collective security and peace with other global leaders, we will continue to listen to communities and implement strategic programs that address their needs.

Updates from the 2023 NATO Vilnius Summit
As Russia continues its unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine — Canada stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine and our
allies. After a productive NATO leaders summit, here is what we are doing to further our support for Ukraine:

  • Training Ukrainian soldiers in Canada — building crucial expertise under OP Unifier.

  • Doubling our troops in Latvia over the next few years and continuing to ensure peace and stability on NATO's Eastern Flank.

  • Officially joining the multinational F-16 Coalition to help protect Ukrainian skies.

  • Establishing a NATO Climate Change and Security Centre of Excellence in Montreal.

  • Providing a further $48.8 million to the Comprehensive Assistance Package for Ukraine.

  • Additional Canadian-made drone cameras for Ukraine.

Increases in the Canada Child Benefit
Since 2016, the Canada Child Benefit has served as a key pillar of support for families across Canada. As of July 20th, Canada Child Benefit (CCB) payments are going up to accommodate inflation rates. The benefit has helped lift 435,000 children out of poverty and this year, Canadian families can expect up to $7,500! Here in Oakville, 1,240 parents will receive an average of $5,648 thanks to the Canada Child Benefit. Our resounding message is that all families deserve a fair chance to succeed.
