At a time when auto thefts are on the rise, making Canadians feel unsafe in their communities, I am taking decisive action to protect our community and ensure a safer Oakville. I have heard your concerns about community safety and auto theft, and I have brought these pressing issues back to Ottawa. There, I have been tirelessly advocating on your behalf. Your voices have been heard and are reflected in our government’s National Action Plan on Combatting Auto Theft.

Announced last week, our National Action Plan on Combatting Auto Theft is a comprehensive strategy focused on three main areas: disrupting, dismantling and prosecuting the organized crime groups that are behind these thefts. It includes legislative changes, tougher penalties of up to 14 years in prison for offenders and enhanced intelligence sharing with domestic and international partners.

More specifically, the government has put forward additions to the Criminal Code providing extra tools for law enforcement and prosecutors to address auto theft.

These include:

  • New offences targeting auto theft and its links to violence and organized crime punishable by a maximum of 14 years.

  • New offences for possession and distribution of a device used to commit auto theft punishable by a maximum of 10 years by indictment.

  • A new offence for laundering the proceeds of crime for the benefit of a criminal organization, punishable by a maximum of 14 years in prison.

  • A new aggravating factor applicable at sentencing where there is evidence that an offender involved a person under the age of 18 in the commission of an offence.

  • Additional investigative tools by making wiretap warrants and DNA orders available for auto theft.

We are also creating a National Intergovernmental Working Group on Auto Theft to coordinate actions, monitor progress and explore new initiatives to stay ahead of those committing these crimes.  Additionally, we are making intervention improvements that will allow more shipping containers to be examined through increased capacity at the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the integration of new targeting tools.

Here in Oakville, I continue to advocate for a collaborative approach across all levels of government and with our Halton Region Police Services so that everyone can do their part to address the safety concerns that exist for our residents.

Most recently, I held conversations with constituents, the Halton Region Police Services District 2, Mayor Burton, MPP Crawford and Councillors from Oakville Wards 3 and 7 to discuss both feedback I hear on safety concerns in our community, and solutions to addressing those concerns.

The feedback I am hearing and relaying in these meetings runs across all levels of government, reinforcing the importance of collaborating on this issue, and includes:

  • More effective information sharing and better collaboration among different jurisdictions and law enforcements.

  • Tougher penalties for organized crime groups involved in auto theft.

  • Improving the provincial court capacity.

  • More police patrolling on Oakville streets.

  • Better lighting on Oakville’s streets.

  • Increasing capacity for the Canada Border Services Agency.

  • Improving digital infrastructure for policing, such as cameras with plate recognition systems.

The safety and well-being of our beautiful community, and indeed of all Canadians is a top priority for me. Your concerns have been central to my approach and actions. I will continue to advocate for Oakville and work collaboratively with all stakeholders so we can work together to ensure a responsive multi-jurisdictional approach that is effective at preventing auto theft in our communities across Canada.
